Bulk Waste Pick-up & Other Collection
Services in City Of Jackson
The City of Jackson is now charging
for the pickup of large amounts of bulk waste left curbside. In 2017, city crews removed over 200 tons of
bulk waste left curbside by residents.
This tonnage did not include vegetation waste left curbside nor garbage
cans emptied by Advanced Disposal.
For many years the city collected
bulk waste left curbside without charge for city customers.
The city provided the truck and crew
to collect bulk waste, at considerable cost to the city, but, the city also
enjoyed a minimal dumping fee at the local landfill for disposal of the bulk
waste. About a year ago, the landfill
began charging the City of Jackson its maximum rate for waste disposal thus
making it impossible for the city to absorb all the costs for this
service. In recent months, the city has
started to enforce its ordinance and charge for curbside bulk waste
pickup. Thus making this a service of
convenience funded via user fees.
A more than 20 year old city
ordinance states:
1)
Discarded
furniture shall not include metal furniture, appliances or large items of
electronic equipment. Customers will be
charged a minimum of $25 up to a maximum of $100 for removal of all other
furniture items; and,
2)
Vegetation
waste is defined as tree limbs, leaves, shrubs, brush trimmings, and grass
taken from the property at which the curbside service is being provided at no
charge to customers. Limbs, trees, or
parts of trees removed from the property by the contractors will not be removed
by the city. All contractors must make
arrangements for disposal of trees or limbs before commencing the work.
The following items cannot be left
curbside and must be disposed of by citizens or residents:
·
Stoves,
refrigerators, water tanks, clothes dryers, television sets, washing machines,
and similar items.
·
Construction
debris whether discarded by a homeowner, occupant, or professional contractor,
shall include waste building materials resulting from construction, remodeling,
repair, or demolition operations.
·
Hazardous
waste includes waste, in any amount, which is defined, characterized or
designated as hazardous by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency or
appropriate state agency, etc. The term
“hazardous waste” shall include batteries, tires, petroleum products, paint and
paint cans, except completely empty paint cans, and such items containing
chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants or Freon.
·
Dead
animals, large or small, cannot be left curbside for pickup.
All household bulk waste should be
left curbside by 6:00 a.m., Monday through Thursday. Please do not leave bulk waste curbside on Fridays,
Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays.
City crews will issue a completed
disposal fee form to the consumer and will forward a copy to City Hall for
invoicing. Fees will also be posted on
city utility bills for city utility customers utilizing the bulk waste pick up
service. Others will be invoiced by
mail at the last known mailing address.
Property owners billed for bulk waste disposal must have paid up to date
in order to get utility service at any of their properties
